Man Made follows four idiosyncratic and equally endearing transmen as they prepare for America’s only bodybuilding competition for men of trans experience, TransFitCon. A profound and moving documentary about strength in its many forms, transgender director T. Cooper’s tender film takes us into the heart of the trans experience – one of resilience, inspiration and strength.
Centring trans voices, the film tracks the four subjects’ emotional and physical transformations, and in doing so interrogates notions of gender, identity, the body and masculinity. Each of the men, to varying degrees, experience difficulty navigating individual authenticity amidst complex social and political terrain.
Rese, a young person of colour is periodically homeless while trying to parent his son. Kennie has just decided to medically transition, a choice that has heartbreaking implications for his relationship. Dominic, an adoptee, has top surgery and connects with his biological family. Mason, a long-time mainstream bodybuilder, finally finds the solidarity he’s been longing for.
An inspiring and provocative film, especially amidst America’s current political climate, Man Made speaks to the strength that can be found in shared solidarity.
